YouTube Shorts Beta, TikTok’s competitor, launches in the USA

YouTube launched its own beta version of TikTok’s short video format in the United States. Called YouTube Shorts, the program is currently only available to a small group of US users. According to the official YouTube Blog, YouTube Shorts will be accessible to everyone in the coming weeks.

Through YouTube Shorts, users can make videos of up to 60 seconds. Similar to TikTok, the included tools are “a multi-segment camera to link multiple video clips and the ability to record with music”.

YouTube short films revolve around music and will be tightly integrated into YouTube’s existing music programs. Excerpts heard in YouTube shorts can link users to the full music video and other artist information on YouTube. In the future, users can create Shorts from a video clip and see other Shorts made with the same music.

YouTube has signed licensing agreements to use millions of songs from more than 250 record labels and publishers. Many of them are major labels and companies, such as Universal Music Group and Sony Music.

Instead of getting a standalone app, YouTube Shorts will be integrated into one line on the YouTube homepage. YouTube will also test a Shorts tab on the phone, making it possible to watch Shorts with a single touch.

The ultimate goal is for YouTube Shorts users to cut audio and make Shorts from any existing video on YouTube, as long as the original creator did not choose to exclude the video from the service. YouTube Shorts in its current version will not allow ads or other monetization features, but the development team has confirmed that it will explore monetization options in the future.

YouTube Shorts was first launched in India in the fall of 2020 and has been successful. According to YouTube, the YouTube Shorts player has won over 6.5 billion daily views worldwide.
