4K media is widely available today, and YouTube is completely full of it, thanks to 4K cameras on smartphones and mirrorless cameras as well. The platform is now allowing more people to view 4K content, with YouTube for Android now streaming 4K content regardless of your screen resolution.
In the past few days, YouTube for Android has largely implemented the ability to view content at up to 4K resolution, if available, even if your screen does not natively offer that resolution.
For the most part, smartphone screens are between 720p and 1440p, with YouTube previously limiting the resolution of streaming a video to the resolution of the screen itself. YouTube for Android is now streaming video at up to 2160p across all monitors. Pixel 4a and Pixel 5 with their 1080p monitors, for example, now have the ability to stream 4K videos on my devices and our informant could see the same on their Pixel 4. Two Reddit topics show that this feature is being implemented quite widely.
Of course, this does not change the actual resolution of the screen itself. AND IF you have a 1080p screen, you’ll still be watching content effectively in 1080p. Yet, streaming higher resolution content will result in slightly clearer content on the screen, even though technically there is no difference in resolution. The difference will be more difficult to see on the screen of a small phone than on a computer, but it is good that Google is giving this option to users.
