Since AllStars Destruction released for PlayStation 5 72 hours ago, the game was plagued by reported cases of verbal harassment, exacerbated by voice chat enabled by default. Today, developer Lucid Games released a fix that changes the default chat to “off”.

Hotfix 1.2.2 “disabled voice communications from the multiplayer lobby by default for all players”, according to a tweet developer. Lucid Games also writes that it is “actively working on long-term improvements to the voice communication system”.

Soon after AllStars Destruction aired, players went to social media to share examples of racial slander, sexism, homophobia and other intolerant speeches. 1 reviewer wrote that they heard an alt-right podcast.

Although disgusting and inexcusable, language like this is, unfortunately, an integral part of online games. Is that they usually come with tools to fight it. To make idiots shut up AllStars Destruction, you need rely on alternative solutions at the system level in the PS5 settings and menus. There is no way in the game to silence individual players or disable voice chat completely. Group chat for AllStars Destruction was relayed via a tiny speaker on the DualSense controller panel, so you could silence the TV and still be subject to a language you don’t want to participate in.

After today’s hotfix, you will not hear any more players through the speaker. Pulling up UndoingActivity cards – those system-level entries on the PS5 – no longer show one for “Voice Chat | AllStars Destruction. ”In my games, it seemed that public voice chat was disabled for now. (The option to create your own party is still present.)

While it is surprising that such a design choice was implemented in the first place, it is incredible to see developers taking such a quick and decisive action to solve a widespread problem.
