One of the most beautiful RPGs of the past decade is now on the Xbox Game Pass.
Square Enix is known for classic turn-based RPGs, such as Final fantasy, but this series has lost its turn-based roots over the years. In the last decade, it was up to smaller games from Square Enix, such as Octopath traveler are keeping the spirit of these classics alive. He managed to do this with mastery, while presenting some of the most beautiful pixel art of all time.
This RPG was first released on the Nintendo Switch in 2018 as one of the platform’s exclusive RPGs. It has since arrived on PC and Google Stadia, and finally on Xbox One and Xbox Series X on March 26 as part of the Xbox Game Pass. If you love RPGs, but somehow lost Octopath traveler, you need to give this beautiful game a try.
Otopopathic travelerThe name of is immediately impressive, but in fact it is an incredibly suitable name. This RPG follows eight different heroes from around the world in Orsterra. Although they all eventually come together, players can choose to start with any of the eight characters in the game. As you come across each member of the group, you will experience your isolated origin story before they agree to join your mission and prevent a threat that ends the world.
Olberic, Cyrus, Tressa, Ophilia, Primrose, Alfyn, Therion and H’aanit have very different personalities. At the end of the game, you will appreciate the distinctive charm of each character, whether Olberic redeeming himself as a Knight or Spring taking revenge on the men who killed his father.
Each character has unique actions that they can perform in and out of battle. With NPCs, a character like Therion can steal them; meanwhile, Olberic could challenge the same NPC to a duel. After entering a battle with an enemy, it unfolds in a very traditional turn-based manner, especially if you are familiar with Bravely Default.
In this easy-to-understand turn-based battle system, storing Boost Points for the chance to use multiple attacks in one turn. Bravely Default 2, which just came out for Nintendo Switch, you will also like this battle system.
Octopath traveler is a solid RPG with a narrative configuration that sets it apart from the classic games of the genre. The most distinctive thing about the game, by far, is its style. Dubbed “HD-2D” by its developers, this style of art offers the classic pixel art you would expect from a retro RPG like this significantly more depth.
By creating 3D environments and skillfully using the lighting technique and camera spotlights, Octopath Traveler is able to make your retro look modern. Each new area and enemy design in this game has the potential to amaze you because of the beauty of it all. This game directly challenges the notion that pixel art was old fashioned news.
It’s such an iconic style that I decided to use it in the next tactic game Project Triangle Strategy (which has an even stranger name than Octopath traveler) This game looks better than ever on the Xbox Series X or on a high-end PC, although you can also play it in the cloud on your phone.
Even if you don’t have the Xbox Game Pass, this is a JRPG that is worth the time of any pixel art lover or fan of hardcore RPG games. Even if you do not insist until the end, you will have the chance to appreciate a lot of your wonderful art.
Octopath traveler is now available on the Xbox Game Pass.
