If you, like me, have always wanted an old Grand Prix machine, but don’t have the money or the motivation to maintain a classic car, theen I have good news for you. One new Kit type 184 can turn an old Mazda MX-5 Miata in an Alfa Romeo 158, a vehicle from the late 1930s that won the first official Formula 1 race at Silverstone in 1950.

If you have watched Ant Anstead’s MotorTrend program Wheeler Dealers, then you can know what’s going on. This is Anstead’s latest project, and I have to admit: I’m a fan.

The Anstead website lists few details about this kit (you must send a deposit to learn more), but in an interview with F1 Geeks, Anstead revealed that the Type 184 will be offering a fully assembled car and kit. That way, you can decide whether you want to work hard to make your own Alpha – or just want the experience of driving one.

And … there is a warning. The kit includes everythingg you need to do the Alpha, without the Miata. You have to bring this to do it yourself – but it will still be a lot cheaper than buying an old Alfa at once. And considering it is a car kit, it is not a perfect replica.

The kit is advertiseded how £ 7,499, which equates to $ 10,192 here in the United States. There is a limited run of 10 kits from these starter packs, so if you want one, you’ll want to get your name on the run with an initial payout of 75 or 50%. If you are one of the first to buy, you will also have a chance to build the car at the Type 184 workshop—with Anstead’s helping hand.

If that doesn’t happen to you, don’t worry: the instructions are well organized into several distinct “chapters” that will guide you through one element of the car at a time. You can also purchase these kits separately in 2021, so you can build and budget at your own pace.
