Are you running out of disinfectant wipes? You may not need to refuel.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Monday that the chance of Covid-19 contamination of surfaces is very low.

In updated guidelines, the CDC wrote:

“People can be infected with SARS-CoV-2 through contact with surfaces. However, based on available epidemiological data and studies of environmental transmission factors, surface transmission is not the main route of spread of SARS-CoV-2 and the risk is considered low.

“The main way in which people are infected with SARS-CoV-2 is through exposure to respiratory droplets that carry the infectious virus. In most situations, cleaning surfaces with soap or detergent, and not disinfecting, is sufficient to reduce the risk.

“Disinfection is recommended in closed community settings where there has been a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours.

“The risk of transmitting fomites can be reduced by wearing masks consistently and correctly, practicing hand hygiene, cleaning and taking other measures to keep the premises healthy.”

The risk of infection is “generally less than 1 in 10,000,” said the CDC.
