You can now play Pokémon Red in someone’s profile picture on Twitter

Constantin Liétard created a way for Twitter to play Pokémon Red

through your profile photo. Twitch Plays Pokémon allows the world to comment on and control a Pokémon game, Liétard pinned tweet asks people to comment Up, Down, Left, Right, A, B, Start or Select to control an emulated Pokémon Red game.

Comments are extracted every 15 seconds, according to Liétard, and the most commented entry is sent to the game. The current state of the game is then automatically transformed into Liétard’s 400×400 Twitter profile picture.

At the time of this writing, Liétard’s level 6 Spearow was battling a level 11 stranger. Unfortunately, Spearow is losing at the moment, so I hope Twitter can find a way to work together to save the bird Pokémon. Oh, and in case you’re curious, Twitter chose Squirtle as the starting Pokémon.

Liétard restarted the game a few times to add more features as its popularity increased, and Liétard manually logs into the game every night to save and ensure that progress is not lost. There is also a official Discord server which allows interested parties to discuss progress in this specific Pokémon Red game. There have been over 30,000 comments so far, and it will be very interesting to see how many will be needed to triumph over the Elite Four.
