‘You are now our guardian angel’: Alabama man with UK variant COVID-19 dies at 35

Alfonzia “AJ” Jackson Jr., 35, Jefferson County, father of two, who was among the first diagnosed cases of the COVID-19 variant in the United Kingdom in Alabama, died, his wife announced on social media Tuesday.

“Sir, this day has been difficult. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone when I said goodbye to my wonderful husband, ”wrote Jackson’s wife, Ashley Jackson. . “You are now our guardian angel and you are at peace, rest with my wonderful husband until we meet again.”

AJ Jackson was admitted to UAB Hospital late last month and was among Alabama’s top three cases of the COVID-19 variant, which is more contagious than the original coronavirus strain. Jackson had organ failure at the hospital.

“My husband, we were talking about getting better, and watching him go from that to a breathing machine is difficult,” Ashley Jackson told AL.com on Sunday. “I have to stay strong for my girls, so when I get too emotional, I have to go to the garage to cry and scream.”

Ashley Jackson created a Gofundme page to raise money for health care and maintenance costs. And she urges people with persistent symptoms that have been negative for COVID to remain vigilant and quarantined until they recover.

The page raised more than $ 71,000 on Tuesday night.
