Adam Ottavino’s disappointing management with the Yankees is over – and he’s headed for the Red Sox.
The right-hand was negotiated for Boston on Monday, a source confirmed, with the Red Sox receiving most of the $ 9 million owed to Ottavino, who is entering the final year of his three-year $ 27 million contract.
The Yankees were trying to move Ottavino, 35, to release the payroll as they plan to stay below the $ 210 million luxury tax limit this season.
Ottavino’s loss leaves the Yankees with Aroldis Chapman, Zack Britton and Chad Green at the back of the bullpen. This also leaves them with another open spot in the 40-player roster, after adding Jameson Taillon, Corey Kluber and DJ LeMahieu last week.
Ottavino was effective in his first season with the Yankees, when he finished with an ERA of 1.90. But he fought in September of that season and was terrible against the Astros at ALCS.
And Ottavino had a difficult season in 2020, when he had 5.89 ERA in 24 games and was a factor not in the playoffs, launching only once and allowing a sequence of one entry in the defeat of the Yankees in Game 2 for the Rays in the ALDS.
“I want to remain on the team. I want to prove my worth. I want to launch well, ”Ottavino told Ken Davidoff of the Post in December.
“I want to finish what we have tried to start over the last few years and win that title and everything. It’s not up to me. So, I don’t pay attention to any of that, really. “
