2021 Spring Training presented by Camping World will officially begin on Sunday, February 28, and the Cactus and Grapefruit League games will feature shortened games and relaxed rules for the spring schedule periods, according to the 2021 Operations Manual.
Spring Training matches until Saturday, March 13, can be shortened to five-entry games or seven-entry games, subject to the mutual agreement of both coaches. Games that take place from Sunday, March 14 until the end of Spring Training on Tuesday, March 30 can be shortened to seven-entry games. Clubs wishing to change the duration of the scheduled game must notify the Commission before 17:00 (Brasília time) the day before the game. All spring training competitions, regardless of duration, may end in a draw after the scheduled duration of the game has been played. Clubs will communicate to fans and broadcast partners any changes made to the duration of the game during Spring Training.
For Spring Training games until Saturday, March 13, Official Baseball Rule 5.09 (e) will be relaxed, allowing defense managers to finish an inning before three are eliminated after any completed board presentation, provided the pitcher has released at least 20 pitches. In addition, starting with the Spring Training games on Sunday, March 14, and continuing until the end of the regular 2021 season, Official Baseball Rule 5.10 (Minimum of Three Batters) will apply. Finally, during Spring Training, pitchers who are removed during any game can re-enter later during the same game.
