Yakuza creator will become Sega’s creative director, ceasing to be CCO

Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi will step down as Sega’s Creative Director and assume the role of creative director – a move seen by some to bring Nagoshi closer to active game development, as opposed to a supervisory role. the change comes between several changes in the Sega executive team and a broader restructuring – although the parent company Sega Sammy makes it clear that there were no “changes in the names, locations, commercial content, capital or end of the fiscal year” of Sega companies as a result of changes.

No specific reasoning was given for Nagoshi’s role change, but many understood that this means that the creator will be returning to more active development.Nagoshi is most famous for creating the Yakuza series and later founding the Development studio Ryu Ga Gotoku, who develops the series for Sega. He also created Daytona USA, Virtua Striker, Super Monkey Ball and Binary Domain, among many other credits. In recent years, his role has been less practical, serving as executive director in all Yakuza games since Yakuza 0 in 2015.

We rewarded the latest Ryu Ga Gotoku game, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, with a 7/10 review, saying that “it takes some bold steps in a new direction for the series, but neglects balance.”
