- Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun wants to know from fans if they would buy a $ 1,500 phone from the company.
- The executive will discuss the issue on February 7.
- He may be suggesting the company’s plans for the foldable phone.
Xiaomi has already ruled the cheap smartphone segment for a while. Even their main phones are generally cheaper than what the competition has to offer. But last year, the Mi 10 Ultra hit the $ 1,000 mark at the top, and it now appears that the Chinese company is looking to go beyond that premium price barrier.
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun asked Weibo followers if they would buy a 10,000 yuan ($ 1,548) phone from the company. He also asked what a Xiaomi phone with that price should be like.
The question may be a hint about a very expensive Xiaomi device, possibly the company’s first folding phone that has been in production for some time. Then again, it may just be the company testing the waters before deciding to jump into the ultra-premium smartphone segment.
This is not the first time Jun has hinted at Xiaomi’s desire to break its reputation as a cheap smartphone maker. The company even started selling its flagship Mi 10 in India last year, signaling that it is willing to try its luck in the premium space, in a country where it has built its strong market share behind basic devices.
However, we hope to hear more about Xiaomi’s plans for supercar phones on February 7, when Jun addresses Mi fans in the Chinese New Year. Until then, let us know what you think of his question.
