With just a few days to go until 2021, the first smartphone with next year’s flagship chip will be made official. The Xiaomi Mi 11 has been announced – here’s what it brings to the table.
With the Mi 11, Xiaomi is shipping the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor with up to 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. It is a highly capable spec sheet with no major commitments. Xiaomi also brought Gorilla Glass Victus, speakers tuned by Harmon Kardon and many extra features, such as an IR blaster and a fingerprint sensor on the screen, which functions as a heart rate sensor. It is true that the latter is very good.
The Xiaomi Mi 11 also comes with a killer camera setup. There is a primary camera of 108MP with OIS and binning 4 in 1 pixel, an ultra wide-angle camera of 13MP at 123 degrees and a telephoto trigger of 5MP. As for the selfie trigger, there is a 20 MP camera that is stuck – no sophisticated camera under the display yet.
The screen itself is a 6.81-inch OLED panel with 120 Hz refresh rate and 480 Hz touch sample rate. It can also reach 1,500 nits of maximum brightness in a pinch and has curved sides as well.
Xiaomi is also provided with MIUI 12, which is based on Android 11. *
As for battery statistics, there is good news and bad news. The battery cell is at 4,600 mAh, which is respectable considering the rest of the package. To charge it, the phone can manage up to 55W of wired charging or 50W of wireless charging. The phone can also reverse wireless charging from another device by up to 10W.
However, to charge your phone, you will need to have a brick already available. Following in Apple’s footsteps, Xiaomi discarded the charger included in the Mi 11, citing “environmental protection efforts”. A version of the phone will be sold in a package with a 55W GaN charger, however, and will cost the same price (starting at RMB 3999) in China.
The Xiaomi Mi 11 will be sold in Midnight Gray, Horizon Blue and Frost White, which are provided with frosted glass back panels. Alternatively, Lilac Purple and Honey Beige colors will have vegan leather. The Mi 11 variants of 8 GB + 128 GB, 8 GB + 256 GB and 12 GB + 256 GB cost RMB 3999, RMB 4299 and RMB 4699 respectively and will be available for pre-order in China starting today.
More about Xiaomi:
* This article has been updated to clarify that the Mi 11 comes with Android 11, not Android 10, as stated earlier. This confusion was due to a typo in Xiaomi’s official announcement post about the device that erroneously says the device is running Android 10 instead of 11.
