Xbox testing brings Microsoft’s Chromium-based Edge browser to consoles

You may finally have a good reason to use the web browser on your console for more than basic needs. The Verge reports that Microsoft has started testing a version of its Chromium-based Edge browser on Xbox One and Series X / S. Take the Alpha Skip-Ahead test and you’ll have a web experience that is more in line with the modern era, including better compatibility and synchronization with Edge on multiple platforms.

This version is buggy and does not include mouse or keyboard support. And while this theoretically allows access to Google Stadia, we would still not have reliable access to this or other intensive web applications.

It may take a while before there is a more polished version of the new Edge for Xbox. When you’re ready, however, the new browser may be a better case for buying an Xbox if browsing the web is important to you. At the moment, PlayStation 5 doesn’t even have an easily accessible browser (you need to have tricks to use it). While that may change, a Chromium-based Xbox browser can give Microsoft a comfortable advantage.
