Xbox Series X and S owners start testing Dolby Vision HDR for games

Microsoft is delivering on its promise to bring Dolby Vision HDR games to the Xbox Series X and Series S, if only for a handful of users. How Forbes reports, players have got that that the launch of the latest Xbox Insider Alpha ring (2104) enables Dolby Vision for X Series and S Series titles. It is only available for some games, including Borderlands 3, Gears 5, Halo: Master Chief Collection and Wreckfest. However, it appears to be effective – the testers said the quality of the Dolby image was more “refined” compared to the normal HDR10, probably due to the dynamic data that adjusts the HDR visuals frame by frame.

The company confirmed the Forbes who was testing Dolby Vision and suggested general availability “soon”, but did not shorten the deadline. So far, it has pledged to launch the feature in 2021.

Dolby Vision support can give the latest Xbox consoles an edge over the PlayStation 5, which is currently limited to HDR10. With that said, you may not be a system vendor. You will need a compatible TV (sorry, Samsung fans) and support games to see the enhanced graphics. The updated HDR can only really work when there are enough TVs and games that you can assume that Vision will be available.
