Xbox Live is being officially renamed Xbox Network

Xbox Live Gold service to keep your title

Microsoft has announced that it is officially renaming its Xbox Live service to “Xbox Network”. The change is not expected to change much in the big picture and apparently was made purely for aesthetic, descriptive and marketing reasons.

“‘Xbox Network’ refers to the underlying Xbox online service, which has been updated in the Microsoft Services Agreement,” said Microsoft in a statement to The Verge. “The upgrade from ‘Xbox Live’ to ‘Xbox network’ aims to distinguish the underlying service from Xbox Live Gold subscriptions.”

Microsoft has confirmed that the paid online service, Xbox Live Gold, will retain its long-standing nickname. Rebranding is not expected for the subscription service or its use in any way. Microsoft probably wants to emphasize this after the disaster earlier this year, when an increase in prices for the Xbox Live Gold service drew user ire and led to a very rapid turnaround for the publisher.
