Xbox Game Streaming app for Windows: touch controls, gyroscope and more

Microsoft is finalizing its Xbox Game Streaming application for Windows PCs, which includes access to game streaming from the company’s xCloud service. We were able to gain access to the latest version of the Xbox Game Streaming app for Windows, an unannounced and unreleased app. Once launched, the app will allow Windows users to stream games from their Xbox Series S / X consoles and xCloud.

Currently, you cannot stream games from the new Xbox consoles to Windows PCs, as this is not compatible with the existing Xbox Console Companion application. This new application will solve that and will also bring xCloud streaming to Windows PCs for the first time. We saw this xCloud app for Windows for the first time last year and it has improved a lot since then.

The Xbox remote game feature, to connect to Xbox consoles, works similarly to the existing Console Companion. You can remotely activate an Xbox console, sign in and play anywhere.

Full touch support is now available, allowing Surface or other touchscreen devices to play Xbox games without a controller. Microsoft also seems to be preparing some form of gyro support here as well. There is an option to enable this, but it still does not appear to be fully functional. This is an internal beta application, so it has not yet been completed.

Microsoft also appears to be preparing 1080p streams for xCloud, instead of the 720p that exists today. This would obviously improve the experience on Windows PCs, ahead of higher resolutions, since Microsoft has upgraded its xCloud servers to include Xbox Series X hardware.

It is not yet clear exactly when this application will be made more widely available. Microsoft is say you are planning a “game news” event next month, so we can hear a lot more about the company’s xCloud plans (for web and iOS too) soon.
