With the recent showing of the four-part documentary series “Allen v. Farrow ”on HBO, Woody Allen’s name has been in the news for the past few weeks. And with so much renewed interest in long-standing accusations against Allen, there is now a new round of people trying to distance themselves from the director.
As reported by the New York Post, Allen and his wife, Soon-Yi Previn, recently contributed $ 1,000 to the campaign for Julie Menin, who is running for a seat on the city council on New York’s Upper East Side. However, Menin and his camp refused the donation and immediately returned it to the couple. “Julie does not know Mr. Allen and the campaign did not ask for this contribution. It was returned the same day it arrived because of previous allegations against Mr. Allen, ”said Menin’s representative, Max Kramer.
Menin is the former commissioner of the mayor’s office for media and entertainment. Allen, who is not considered a regular political donor, listed himself as self-employed and in the film business.
The news comes as Allen and Previn defend themselves against HBO’s new series of documentaries, which takes an in-depth look at the claims of Allen’s estranged daughter, Dylan Farrow, that he molested her when she was seven years old.
Allen and Previn have been married since 1997, a controversial relationship in itself, as Previn is the adopted daughter of Mia Farrow, Allen’s longtime partner at the time the couple started the relationship. The duo said the following about the release of the documentary:
“These documentary filmmakers had no interest in the truth,” says Allen and Previn’s joint statement (via THR). “Instead, they spent years surreptitiously collaborating with the Farrows and their facilitators to put together an ax job riddled with falsehoods. Woody and Soon-Yi were approached less than two months ago and had only a few days to ‘respond’. Of course, they refused to do so. “
The statement continues: “As has been known for decades, these claims are categorically false. Several agencies investigated them at the time and found that, regardless of what Dylan Farrow may have been led to believe, absolutely no abuse had occurred. It is not surprising that the broadcaster that will broadcast this is HBO – which has a production and commercial relationship agreement with Ronan Farrow. While this poor-quality hit piece may attract attention, it does not change the facts. “
