The film’s premiere on HBO Max accumulates more screening time for a feature film, according to the rating service.
WarnerMedia praised the performance of Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max, although without any hard to see numbers.
Now, Nielsen has put some data behind the allegations: the rating service says the film won over a large audience over the opening weekend, becoming the biggest feature film in the Nielsen ranking – and one of the biggest titles in streaming of any kind since Nielsen launched its measurement.
In the week of December 21-27, HBO Max users spent 2.25 billion minutes watching Wonder Woman 1984 (it was released on Christmas Day). This is equivalent to about 14.9 million complete reproductions of the 151-minute film. It is also 580 million minutes more than number 1 of the week previously published by Nielsen, Pixar Soul on Disney + (1.67 billion minutes), and the third highest weekly total for any title since Nielsen started rolling out weekly streaming numbers in August 2020.
After the film’s release, HBO Max said that almost half of its retail subscribers watched the film on the day of the premiere.
Nielsen does not yet regularly include HBO Max in its weekly rankings, although it does count WarnerMedia as a customer. The rating service says that launching display numbers for Wonder Woman 1984 it is a unique view “as we work to input data externally” (there is no timeline for HBO Max to be a regular part of streaming ratings).
“The impact of Wonder Woman 1984 at HBO Max cannot be underestimated, “said HBO Max executive vice president and general manager Andy Forssell.” As it was announced on Wednesday during our earnings and as Nielsen data shows, it was a great Christmas gift for the consumer at a time when they wanted and needed it. This partnership with Warner Bros., of course, continues throughout the year, but it started with Wonder Womanarrival on Christmas Day with great success. “
The big Nielsen numbers for Wonder Woman 1984 also follow an audience survey by the Hollywood research firm Screen Engine / ASI, which found that the film had the longest first week of any SVOD film in 2020.
HBO Max currently has about 17.2 million “activated” users – that is, those who downloaded the HBO Max app and started or updated a subscription. WarnerMedia and parent company AT&T say 37.7 million people have access to the streaming platform, including those who subscribe to HBO through a cable or satellite provider. Netflix, by contrast, has almost 74 million subscribers in the United States and Canada and 203.7 million worldwide; Disney + had 86.8 million global subscribers on December 2.
