Wonder Woman 1984 Lassos $ 16.7 million on opening weekend

After several delays, Wonder Woman 1984 finally hit the masses this weekend. And while the vast majority of viewers watched the movie on HBO Max from the comfort (and safety) of their own homes, the long-awaited superhero sequel also debuted in cinemas that are still open across the country. And it performed better at the box office than anyone probably expected. According to Variety, WW84 managed to raise $ 16.7 million internally in the first three days of launch.

Typically, an opening weekend figure like this would be considered a failure. It is also a big step compared to the original Wonder Woman, which raised more than $ 100 million in its first weekend in 2017. But, as we are still in the midst of a global health crisis, these latest numbers are really impressive. At the moment, only 35% of US cinemas are open and all are operating at reduced capacity. Variety also notes that the majority of WW84The box office came from private parties, which are generally considered to be the safest way to watch movies in theaters during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Wonder Woman 1984 it also outperformed other box office hits that it tried to open during the pandemic. Overcame Christopher Nolan’s Principle, which raised just $ 9.5 million after opening in September. In addition, the streak yielded more than double The New Mutants, which only managed a $ 7 million opening weekend in August. It is also worth mentioning that these films premiered with at least 62% of the country’s theaters in operation.

Like other streaming services, HBO Max is not releasing specific numbers of viewers. But apparently, “almost half” of its 12.6 million active users watched Wonder Woman 1984 on the weekend. The film also debuted more than a week ago in selected international markets. This weekend, it raised an additional $ 19.4 million in 42 other countries, bringing its global total to $ 85 million. The performance of the sequence also recently led Warner Bros. finally getting the green light Wonder Woman 3, with director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot returning.
