It was the highest grossing theatrical release of the pandemic after its debut on Christmas Day.

And it turns out that Warner Bros. decision debuting Wonder Woman in 1984 on WarnerMedia’s subscription streaming service, HBO Max, at the same time as in theaters, it was worth it.

On Wednesday, parent company AT&T revealed that, as a result, 17.7 million active users were added to HBO Max by the end of December.

That number was double what it had at the end of September.

AT&T CEO John Stankey shared the news of the success during a fourth quarter earnings conference call.

“The launch of Wonder Woman 1984 helped propel our domestic HBO Max and HBO subscribers to more than 41 million, two years faster than our initial forecast,” said Stankey, as reported by THR.com.

Just two days after the film’s release, Warner Bros. announced it would be quick – tracking a third film in the franchise with Gadot replaying his role as Diana Prince and Patty Jenkins returning as a screenwriter and director.

The success of Wonder Woman in 1984 in theaters and streaming will boost confidence in the company’s controversial decision to proceed with the hybrid launch of its entire 2021 film roster.

The combined debut of movies in theaters and streaming seems likely to further increase activations.

‘Activations’ count the number of people who download (activate) the HBO Max app.

THR.com reports that the company expects to reach 50 million to 55 million HBO Max customers in the United States by 2025.

WarnerMedia is also planning to launch an advertising-supported version of HBO Max in the second quarter of the year and to begin rolling out the streaming service internationally.
