“Wonder Woman 1984” plummeted at China’s box office on its second weekend at theaters in the region.

The superhero sequel raised just $ 1.5 million over the weekend, according to Artisan Gateway, a Chinese film consultancy. It is a 92% drop from its opening weekend in China, when it raised $ 18 million.

He has raised $ 85 million globally so far.

The opening weekend for the film was slow for China, whose theater industry began to recover after being hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic (the Chinese box office even surpassed North America as the biggest in the world this year). The Chinese film “The Rescue” also fell below projections, with $ 36 million last weekend.

But this weekend was different, as the Hong Kong action film “Shock Wave 2” grossed $ 64.5 million in China and the Chinese fantasy film “Dream of Eternity” grossed $ 39 million. Even so, “Wonder Woman 1984” continued to fail in the region.

“Wonder Woman 1984” did better in its US theatrical debut over the weekend. It raised $ 16.7 million, the best debut since the pandemic began, but a sign that American cinemas are far from a full recovery. 2017’s “Wonder Woman” grossed $ 103 million for the opening weekend in the U.S. Ultimately, it raised $ 822 million worldwide, $ 90.5 million of which came from China.

“Wonder Woman 1984” debuted simultaneously on WarnerMedia’s streaming service, HBO Max, in the United States over the weekend (not yet available internationally). WarnerMedia said on Sunday that nearly half of its retail subscribers (those who subscribe directly to Max instead of through a cable provider) watched the film on its first day on Friday, but did not provide specific viewing numbers. Max had 12.6 million activations on December 8.

Industry experts said earlier that piracy could be a problem once the film was available for broadcast.

“An immaculate, high-definition copy of the film will be available in everyone’s queues in a few days,” Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at Box Office Pro, told Business Insider last week.

But the lack of enthusiasm for “Wonder Woman 1984” may have contributed to its dramatic decline at China’s box office. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he scored a score of 7.8 on the Chinese ticket app Maoyan and 6.5 on the Chinese social network Douban.

The film was generally less favored than its predecessor, “Wonder Woman”, between audiences and critics.

It has a critical score of 65% for Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 73% based on more than 1,700 user reviews (“Wonder Woman” has a critical score of 93% and 84% audience). The sequence received a B + at Cinemascore, which polls the audience on the opening night of a film (the first film received an A).
