No. 14 Virginia won her second victory of the week on Saturday, winning a 4-1 victory over No. 18 in South Carolina at Boar’s Head Sports Club.

Virginia used the doubles and singles victories of senior Rosie Johanson (Vancouver, British Columbia), junior Amber O’Dell (New Milford, NJ) and freshman Emma Navarro (Charleston, SC) to claim victory. South Carolina’s point came from a victory in court four in the singles.

Navarro took victory in the battle at the top of the lineup, returning after losing his first set to guarantee victory. The freshman from Virginia defeated No. 34 Mia Horvit, a fifth-year veteran of the Gamecocks, by a score of 1-6, 6-0, 6-1.

Virginia took the lead by claiming courts one and two in pairs, winning victories over South Carolina’s nationally ranked pairs in both courts.

After the Gamecocks won on the third court, the pair from Virginia Munera (Pereira, Colombia) and Natasha Subhash (Fairfax, Virginia) defeated number 20 Silvia Chinellato and Emma Shelton by a score of 6-2 on court two. The Cavaliers then closed the doubles point when Virginia broke the serve on the first court and Johanson and Navarro’s pair defeated Megan Davies and Horvit’s double number 29-5 on the court.

O’Dell and Johanson scored consecutive wins on courts six and three, respectively, to push Virginia to a 3-0 lead on the double scoreboard. South Carolina entered the table with a 6-4 win by Chinellato, 6-2 in singles before Navarro secured the win.

“It was a very disputed victory for the team tonight. South Carolina is a good team that makes you win everything, ”said UVA coach Sara O’Leary. “There were many changes in momentum, but I thought that our team remained composed regardless of the situation and won tonight. I am very proud of them. “

Virginia is scheduled to return to action on Friday, February 19, when the Cavaliers will receive the No. 6 Duke to open the ACC game.
