Women’s Basketball Classification: Georgia Reaches Power 10 in Week 16

We arrived at the conference tournament! ACC, SEC and Pac-12 have been closed, but there are still many conferences underway for an opportunity for teams to win their ticket to the NCAA women’s basketball tournament.

We have a week to go before the Monday of the National Team, so here is my final ranking of the Power 10 in Week 16 of women’s college basketball. In addition, there is a new team presented for the first time in my ratings.

1. UConn – The Huskies overtook their Big East opponents to finish 18-0 at the conference and win the regular season title. The nation’s No. 1 team had a 23-1 overall, falling to Arkansas on January 28. UConn showed its resilience outside of the Big East, dominating the top 25 SEC opponents – Tennessee and South Carolina. UConn is led by armed freshman Paige Bueckers, who won the Big East Player and Freshman of the Year awards. Bueckers joins Maya Moore as the only woman in Big East history to win both awards in the same season.

2. NC State – Say hello to the ACC consecutive champions! NC State took care of business in the same way that it ended the 2020 season, defeating Louisville 58-56 and earning its entry into the NCAA Tournament. This is the second time this season that Wolfpack has been able to take down Louisville. NC State is rolling in a string of eight consecutive victories and looking to maintain that momentum on their journey to try for a national title. While Wolfpack waits for the National Team on Monday, March 15, they have built a strong case to become the No. 1 seed, eliminating two No. 1 teams in one season and ending up as ACC champions.

3. Texas A&M – The Aggies won their first regular season SEC title in the program’s history against South Carolina on February 28, which set a 9-0 record against the top 25 opponents. A&M ended with an overall record of 23-2 and amassed an incredible record against teams like Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee. Unfortunately, the Aggies were unable to remain undefeated against ranked opponents after facing n. 16 Georgia. The Bulldogs eliminated the Aggies in the semifinals of the SEC tournament, 74-68.

4. Stanford – Talk about a comeback! Stanford had a hiccup in the middle of the season, suffering consecutive defeats against Colorado and UCLA – his only two defeats of the season. Since then, Stanford’s streak of 14 consecutive wins has led to a reduction in the 14th title of the regular Pac-12 season and the 12th championship of Pac-12. The cardinal managed to avenge the defeat to the Bruins in the championship game, 75-55. Throughout the season, Stanford’s versatility showed that they will be a scary team in March.

5. South Carolina – Gamecocks may have fallen to Texas A&M to become the champions of the regular season, but what better way than to come out on top as champions of the SEC tournament? South Carolina defeated Georgia and won the SEC title for consecutive seasons. Aaliyah Boston attracted a lot of attention in painting throughout the season, but remained a force for her team, adding double-digit points in each tournament competition and came out as the SEC’s MVP.

6. Baylor – The 21-2 Bears secured the Big 12 regular season title and is currently on a 13-game winning streak going into their final regular season game against West Virginia. Despite the adversities that Baylor has faced, the current national champion has a balanced attack that leads the country in margin of rebound, assists per game and is the 10th highest scorer in the country. Baylor is led by NaLyssa Smith, who has scored double figures in 21 consecutive games.

7. Maryland – Watch out for the ten champions of the regular season. The Terps are ready to make a splash on the national scene with the country’s number one offensive, and it got more frightening with Angel Reese back on the surface after suffering an injury. This adds five Terps to the double-digit score, led by Ashley Owusu, who can score in various fashions. This team also features Katie Benzan, who is No. 1 in the percentage of three-point shots in 51.6% shots. Maryland’s ten-game winning streak includes notable victories over Iowa, Northwestern and Michigan.

8. Louisville This was not how Louisville wanted to end his regular season, dropping to NC State in the ACC championship game … again. Especially not how lonely Dana Evans wanted to end the conference in her senior year. But there is still a lot of basketball for the Cardinals. Louisville has had a few hiccups this season against Florida State and NC State twice, but I don’t think that determines his fate. You cannot count this team led by Evans.

9. UCLA – UCLA dropped Arizona in the semifinals to face Stanford in the Pac-12 Championship, but the Bruins failed to finish on the Pac 12 throne. In the two-game series between UCLA and Stanford, the Bruins emerged victorious in their last fight on 22 January. UCLA was hampered by limited depth on the bench this season, which was shown by several outbreaks of injuries and cramps against Stanford’s Infinite Weapons.

10. Georgia – They say the scariest teams are the ones that heat up during the tournament season, and the Bulldogs are on fire right now. Despite falling to South Carolina in the SEC Championship, SEC coach of the year, Joni Taylor, led the Bulldogs to defeat Kentucky and Texas A&M to reach the finals. The Bulldogs gave South Carolina a run for their money, dropping Gamecocks by five points. Georgia ended the season 20-6 overall, 12-6 against SEC opponents and was listed as seed number 3 in the NCAA DI women’s basketball selection committee’s second revelation. It will be interesting to see what noise Bulldogs will continue to make at the NCAA Tournament.
