Woman in custody after a teenager shot in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida. – Fort Lauderdale police say a 32-year-old woman is in custody after a Tuesday morning shooting, injuring a teenager and an elderly man.

The suspect was identified as Gwendlyn Whitfield-Dorsey of Fort Lauderdale, and she will face two counts of attempted first-degree murder, police said.

Detectives say they believe it was a domestic incident, although they are still investigating and have not revealed their relationship to the two injured people.

Sgt. DeAnna Greenlaw said in an email to Local 10 News that the police responded to a shootout just before 8:30 am in block 2900 of the 13th Southwest Court. While at the scene, they heard gunshots in the immediate area and ran to investigate.

According to Greenlaw, police found an armed woman in the front yard of a house and ordered her to drop the gun she was holding.

“Subsequently, the police determined that the woman was responsible for disarming the suspect during the fight. The suspect, a different adult woman, was identified and taken into custody without further incident, ”said the FLPD in a press release.

She said the teenager was in critical but stable condition, while the elderly man suffered non-fatal injuries.

“Detectives will be in the area gathering the details of what exactly happened before our officers arrived,” said Greenlaw.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released.

“It is unusual in this area. Very quiet area, ”said Joe Smariga, who lives in the area.

The reason for the shooting also remains unclear at this time.

“We are very grateful that we managed to bring this to a quick end, without anyone getting hurt,” said Acting Assistant Chief Frank Sousa.
