Woman gives birth to a baby with antibodies after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy

The first known case of a baby born with COVID-19 antibodies after the mother received the vaccine several weeks before delivery was reported in Palm Beach County, Florida.

Two pediatricians based in Boca Raton, Florida, detailed the results in a prepress case report this month, which has not yet been peer reviewed.

Doctors say a frontline health worker who was 36 weeks pregnant received her first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in January.

She gave birth to a healthy baby girl three weeks later and the researchers took a blood sample from the baby’s cord to look for antibodies to determine whether they were passed from mother to baby, something that occurs with other vaccines given during pregnancy. Researchers note that the woman received the second dose after delivery, according to the 28-day vaccination schedule.

“We report the first known case of a child with detectable IgG SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in umbilical cord blood after maternal vaccination,” concluded the researchers in their report.

“This is a small case where there will be thousands upon thousands of babies born to mothers who have been vaccinated [over] in the coming months, ”said Chad Rudnick, a doctor involved in the research WPBF.

The researchers said more studies needed to be done to determine how maternal coronavirus vaccination could provide some protection for children against the virus.

“We asked other researchers to create pregnancy and breastfeeding records, as well as to conduct studies of the efficacy and safety of COVID-19 vaccines in pregnant and lactating women (sic) and their children,” said the report.
