Woman dies after being thrown from an SUV in an accident in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY – A woman died after being thrown from an SUV as it passed I-15 on Wednesday, according to Utah Highway Patrol officials.

Utah Highway Patrol Lieutenant Nick Street said the Mercedes SUV driver left the left lane on I-15 and tried to exit the I-80 connecting ramp to the west. The driver lost control of the SUV and he rolled twice, stopping at the 500 South ramp to I-180 west.

The driver was thrown through the sunroof with the force of the roll and stopped about 30 feet from the raised ramp. The other occupants of the vehicle, a male passenger and two children, did not appear to be in critical condition, but were transported to the hospital, Street said.

The accident was initially considered fatal, but the driver showed “signs of life” and was reported to be in critical condition. Street said the woman was transported to the hospital, but died of her injuries.

According to the Utah Department of Transportation, the ramp from north I-15 to west I-80 is currently closed, but it is estimated to open around 6:45 pm

More information, including the identities of those involved, was not released.
