It is rumored that Penn State linebacker Lance Dixon would enter the transfer portal and that once he did, Michigan football would be an immediate candidate.
In fact, it is something that has been talked about for months, even before Ronald Bellamy, a former coach at Dixon’s high school, started working as a coach for Michigan football receivers.
But now that Dixon has finally entered the transfer portal, which became official on Thursday, the Wolverines can make their effort a reality.
And according to Sam Webb of Michigan Insider, the Wolverines are the first favorites, although he also warns that it is not a dunk.
L: going back to Dixon’s recruitment profile, Michigan was a team in the mix, as he was one of the best recruits in the state of Michigan, but he chose the Nittany Lions over the Wolverines and others.
Outside of West Bloomfield, Dixon was ranked as the No. 179 overall prospect in the 2019 class according to the ranking consisting of 247 sports. However, 247 sports scored much, much higher on their own. Dixon was a five star according to 247 and player number 13 overall.
Still, Dixon has seen limited action over the past two seasons with Penn State seeing action in just seven games and ending his 2020 season with 10 tackles, including 2.5 per defeat.
Although Webb is warning Michigan football fans not to get too excited about Dixon, many things in terms of tea leaves indicate that a move to Ann Arbor may be coming.
Earlier this week, current Michigan security guard Makari Paige, another West Bloomfield student, tweeted about West Bloomfield for Ann Arbor.
This could be interpreted as being about Bellamy, who was announced by Michigan football over the weekend after taking the Lakers to a state championship.
But Chris Balas, from the Wolverines, quoted the tweet and replied to “Watch the transfer portal”. Three days later, Dixon is on the portal and Michigan appears to be in hot pursuit.
Paige and Cornell Wheeler are already Wolverines and Donovan Edwards is another recruit from West Bloomfield. And it can’t hurt that Dixon’s former high school coach is on the team.
On top of that, Michigan desperately needs linebacker game creators, especially guys like Dixon, who have the athletic build to play well in passing coverage. He is a true linebacker with three strokes and you have the feeling that he would play immediately.
