With Navalny out of prison, West must do more than condemn Putin

A kangaroo court ordered Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny to be jailed for two and a half years for allegedly violating his probation – while he was in a coma thanks to a Kremlin poisoning plan. Western leaders have properly condemned the injustice – but it seems like small talk.

After all, President Biden has just extended the Moscow-friendly arms limit treaty, New Start, for five years, while Germany continues to move ahead with a Nord Stream pipeline that will give Putin greater influence over border states like Ukraine.

Put this “internal issue” aside, as Putin’s minions call it: with its wars (by proxy and others), its cheating in the Olympics, its cyber attacks and meddling in the elections of other nations and its taking over the territory of other countries , Russia’s strongman himself proved an enemy of civilized norms. It’s time to stop doing business with him, period, and start treating him like the outcast he should be.
