With billions at stake, Governor Whitmer and Michigan Republicans refuse to budge

DETROIT – A year ago, the governor and the Michigan legislature discussed how to deal with the COVID crisis.

More recently, the Republican-controlled body approved an additional $ 4 billion budget with many restrictions that would require Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer to waive emergency powers.

On Monday, Whitmer pondered his position.

Both sides are staying true to form. Neither side is moving and the war of words continues to escalate.

“We have $ 5 billion that has been allocated to the Michigan Legislature, whose Republican control is trying to contain those dollars and trying to force me to give up the executive powers that I used to save lives. They know it will never happen and it is very sad, ”said Whitmer.

Whitmer was on MSNBC on Monday morning.

“And so, for our legislature to play this dangerous game with the resources we desperately need is really disappointing, but unfortunately you know that we have to keep trying to do everything we can to move on,” said Whitmer.

Republican House leader Ben Fredericks of Owosso believes the governor is playing a dangerous and obstinate role games.

“I think she continues to paint the picture that she is a governor who simply wants to behave in an authoritarian way when talking about her desire to work with others in all opportunities that have been rejected. Working with this governor simply means doing it, ”said Owosso.

Getting the billions of dollars that the federal government is offering Michiganders continues to become more difficult.

“The governor will have to realize that he is going alone and that the shots at the press conference decision have to stop. We cannot continue to destroy our lives in increments of two to three based on what someone, a person can say. There needs to be a plan, ”said Owosso.
