Wisconsin healthcare system: Aurora Medical Center worker deliberately spoiled vaccine

GRAFTON, Wisconsin. – A Wisconsin health care worker said on Wednesday that 500 doses of the coronavirus vaccine that had to be discarded after being left without refrigeration now appear to have been deliberately damaged by an employee.

Aurora Medical Center first reported on the damaged doses on Saturday, and said that they had been accidentally left out overnight by an employee at their Grafton facility.

In a statement on Wednesday, Aurora said the official involved “today acknowledged that he intentionally removed the vaccine from refrigeration”.

Aurora’s statement said they had dismissed the employee and referred the matter to the authorities for further investigation. The statement said nothing about a possible reason for the action, and health care workers did not immediately respond to messages asking for more information.

“We continue to believe that vaccination is our way out of the pandemic. We are more than disappointed that this individual’s actions will result in more than 500 people being delayed in receiving the vaccine,” the statement said.

Aurora declined to provide additional information, but said it would provide more details on Thursday.
