A competitor on the US TV show Destroy died of a heart attack after completing the program’s obstacle course, determined a coroner.
Michael Paredes, 38, participated in the TBS program on November 18, 2020, but was taken from the set to the hospital after suffering a medical emergency.
A coroner’s report now concluded that Paredes, who died the day after the incident, suffered a heart attack due to undetected coronary artery disease, reports NBC News. A toxicology report was also carried out, which showed that the competitor had no drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of his death.
Destroy asks competitors to complete four rounds composed of various obstacles, with the final winner of every 24 participants in the season winning the title of Wipeout Champion, in addition to $ 50,000 (£ 36.5k).
According to the report, Paredes completed two obstacle courses before falling into the third. After failing to swim to the side of the pool he was in, he was pulled out and placed in a wheelchair. He later lost consciousness, underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Santa Clarita, California.
Walls, like all the others Destroy competitors, underwent a medical examination before being allowed to participate in the show.
In a statement shared after the competitor’s death, a TBS spokesman said: “We are devastated to hear of his death and our most sincere condolences go out to the family.”
Destroy first aired on ABC in 2008 and ran until 2014. In 2020, it was restarted by TBS with presenters John Cena, Nicole Byer and Camille Kostek.
