We learned the cause of the death of the ‘Wipeout’ competitor who passed out shortly after completing the obstacle course, and this highlights the hidden dangers of extreme sports programs.
The competitor, 38 years old Michael Paredes, died of a heart attack caused by coronary artery disease … according to the Los Angeles County Coroner.
The autopsy report, obtained by TMZ, notes that Paredes was running an obstacle course built on a body of water when he fell into the depths. He swam to the water’s edge, but was unable to withdraw, and when he was finally pulled out, he was placed in a wheelchair.
Paredes leaned sideways in the wheelchair and had cardiopulmonary arrest. He was resurrected before he was rushed to a hospital, the report says.
The competitor died about 24 hours after admission. The autopsy reveals extensive blockage in his coronary arteries. The right coronary artery had stenosis of up to 90% – narrowing or narrowing – and the other coronary arteries also had problems. An acute case of pneumonia is also mentioned as a secondary factor.
When we released the story in November, production sources told us that ‘Wipeout’ contestants underwent medical examinations before participating … and the autopsy notes that Paredes had no reported medical history.
It is very scary to think … the guy may have been walking around without knowing he had severe coronary artery disease … something that doctors say is very common.
