Winter storm warning issued for parts of NE Illinois, NW Indiana with heavy snow forecast – NBC Chicago

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm alert for parts of Illinois and Indiana, as heavy snow and icy winds are expected by Tuesday morning.

The notice will take effect at 6pm on Sunday in Kankakee and eastern Will counties in Illinois, along with Lake, Porter, Newton and Jasper counties in northwest Indiana. The notice will remain in effect until 9am on Tuesday.

The whole of Cook County will also be on a winter storm alert starting at 3 am on Monday and ending at noon on Tuesday.

According to the warning, icy temperatures and occasional snow are forecast for Sunday night, with the main threat of snow arriving during the night shift on Monday. Approximately 10 to 20 centimeters of snow is possible in the affected areas, and the areas closest to Lake Michigan can see even more snow due to the increased effect of the lake.

Wind chills of up to 20 degrees below zero are also possible in affected counties, with freezing night temperatures potentially affecting the effectiveness of salt and other road treatments, according to the warning.

A winter weather alert was issued for Lake County in Illinois, along with Kane, DuPage, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy and northern and southern Will counties. The notice will take effect at noon on Monday and will last until 9am on Tuesday.

Snowfall is expected in the impacted areas, with cold winds also posing a threat to these communities.
