Syracuse, NY – The massive winter storm that stretches from southern Texas to northern Maine will rise in Upstate New York tonight, bringing wet, heavy snow and, in some areas, sleet and freezing rain, Tuesday morning. market.
The heaviest snow is expected to fall in central New York, with western New York receiving less snow and the southern layer and the capital region collecting more hail and ice.
About an inch of snow fell this morning, but after an afternoon lull, the storm is likely to intensify as it enters New York from the southwest. The heaviest snow will fall around 7:00 pm to 7:00 am. Buffalo can reach 20 centimeters during those 12 hours; Syracuse about 9 inches. In Binghamton and Albany, a few inches of snow are expected with a greater mix of hail and a thin layer of ice.
The storm is dragging moisture and warmer air, more than 2,400 kilometers from the Gulf of Mexico. Temperatures will rise slowly overnight and until Tuesday in Upstate, potentially rising above zero in the Southern Tier late Tuesday morning. These higher temperatures will mean less snow and more hail, and perhaps even just rain until the end of the storm on Tuesday afternoon.
This will not be fluffy snow with a lake effect, so be careful when shoveling snow and blowing snow.
Winter storm alerts are in effect in most of upstate New York, and forecasters are predicting a slippery direction for work on Tuesday morning. Schools are closed this week for winter holidays, but districts have already started canceling other activities scheduled for Tuesday.
Snow and hail are expected to decrease on Tuesday morning or early afternoon, although some windy areas of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario could see some lake-effect snow after the main storm.
Wednesday is expected to be dry and storm free, but the postponement will be short-lived. A similar storm on a similar trajectory is likely to hit upstate New York on Thursday or Friday, bringing another winter mix. This storm is still being observed, and meteorologists have yet to offer any predictions about the total snowfall.
