Winter storm can bring up to two inches of snow to Detroit metropolitan area

DETROIT – Everything seems to be on track with the winter storm approaching the Detroit metropolitan area this weekend.

Snow will develop around midnight on Saturday along southern Michigan and spread northward overnight. It appears that the heaviest snowfall rates will develop south of I-94, with most of the build-up occurring late in the evening until Sunday morning.

An interesting and very important feature is that the low pressure area that passes to our south will be in the process of weakening on Sunday. For the Detroit metropolitan area, this means that snow is likely to decrease in intensity and coverage on Sunday afternoon. There will still be snow around – especially in the southern part of the state – but not as heavy as the late Saturday night and Sunday morning snow.

The heaviest accumulation, probably in four to five inches range, it will be near and south of the M-50, also known in various parts of Monroe and Lenawee counties as S. Custer Road, Tecumseh Street and Monroe Road. Or, if the roads are not your beach, but you know where the cities are, approximately near and south of a Monroe-Dundee-Tecumseh-Brooklyn line.

North of the M-50, perhaps as far north as Michigan Avenue or Ford Road, will likely receive about two to four inches of snow. This includes Chelsea, Ann Arbor, Saline, Taylor, Wayne, Flat Rock and most of Downriver.

The north of this region is likely to have one to two inches of snow that covers Livingston County, much of Oakland County and the southern part of Macomb County. Anywhere north of that region is likely it won’t even reach an inch of snow.

The National Meteorological Service issued an winter weather warning to Lenawee, Monroe, Washtenaw and Wayne counties of Michigan, from midnight on Saturday to 10 pm on Sunday.

Obviously, and this is true with any snow event, there may be local factors that increase or decrease snow in some areas. But that should give you a good idea of what to expect on Sunday. Some computer models try to generate some snow on Monday, but the accumulations (if any) would be less than an inch. Consider this to be a Sunday snow.
