Windows 10 is getting new File Explorer icons as part of a visual review

Microsoft is doing a visual makeover in the Windows 10 File Explorer with new icons. The software giant has started releasing a trial version of Windows 10 that includes changes to the system icons you’ll find in File Explorer, including the Recycle Bin, document folders and devices like disk drives.

“Several changes, like the orientation of folder icons and standard file type icons, have been made for greater consistency in Microsoft products that show files,” said Amanda Langowski, head of Windows Insider at Microsoft. “Notably, top-level user folders, such as the Desktop, Documents, Downloads and Images, have a new design that should make it a little easier to distinguish them at first glance.”

Perhaps boldly, Microsoft also notes that “and yes, the Recycle Bin icon has also been updated!” – a clear nod to some changes that the company has tried to make in the Recycle Bin in the past that Windows users did not like.

These icon changes are quite small in the grand scheme of Windows, but are part of a broader effort within Microsoft to modernize Windows. Microsoft unveiled new system icons for Windows 10 earlier this month, and the company already updated some of its Windows 10 icons last year with color versions and also adjusted the Start menu to make it simpler.

Microsoft is also planning a “comprehensive visual rejuvenation of Windows”, codenamed “Sun Valley”. The company is expected to detail its visual plans and more about the future of Windows in the coming months, as part of a dedicated news event.

Icon updates will arrive along with some adjustments to the File Explorer layout as well. Microsoft is adding additional padding between elements in the File Explorer and there will be a compact way to return to classic File Explorer mode. The updated view is slightly more optimized for touch and complements the new icons.
