In the episode released on Monday, Smith joined presenters Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, Dan Pfeiffer and Tommy Vietor to promote his new Netflix docuseries “Amend: The Fight for America”, but also discussed his personal interest in politics.
The podcast is presented by a group of former advisers to former President Barack Obama.
The 52-year-old actor emphasized that “absolutely” has an opinion when it comes to activism, systemic racism and ideas for the country’s future. When asked if he would ever consider running for political office, the actor was not afraid to express his intentions.
“I will certainly do my part, whether I remain artistic or, at some point, venture into the political arena,” said Smith.
As for the moment, he was not sure, saying, “For now, let this office be cleaned up a bit. I will consider this at some point in the future.”
For now, Smith is focused on his latest project, “Amend: The Fight for America”.
The six-episode documentary series creates an in-depth conversation about the fight for equal rights in the United States through the lens of the 14th Amendment. Smith explained that this amendment is the most cited in American law. It states that no state can “deprive anyone of life, liberty or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws ”.
Smith was executive producer on the series and presenter. “Amend: The Fight for America” is now available for streaming on Netflix.
