Will Muschamp is officially back with the SEC.
Muschamp, dismissed from South Carolina’s coaching position in November, officially joined Kirby Smart’s team in Georgia as a defensive analyst. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Smart described the position as an “off-field function”.
“He has already gone a long way towards helping me, helping our people. He will be able to help train coaches. He will work with the defensive side of the ball, ”said Smart.
The university listed Muschamp’s title as a “quality control” coach with a salary of $ 300,000. This is one of the lowest paying shows on the UGA team, but finances are not much of a problem for Muschamp. It was revealed last month that Muschamp received $ 12.9 million as part of a purchase agreement with South Carolina.
Muschamp and Smart were teammates in Georgia in the 1990s. They also trained together as assistants at Valdosta State and LSU.
After stopping as a defensive coordinator in Auburn and Texas, Muschamp got his first job as a head coach in Florida in 2011. This lasted for four seasons. The Gators went 11-2 in Muschamp’s second season, but went 17-19 in the other three.
Thereafter, Muschamp spent a season at Auburn training defense before getting another chance to be the head coach, this time in South Carolina. In Columbia, Muschamp made it to season five, but did not finish. He was fired after a 2-5 start in 2020, giving him an overall 28-30 mark with Gamecocks.
Now Muschamp will have a chance to restart his coaching career in Athens, where his son is a substitute quarterback for the Bulldogs. Jackson Muschamp was in his first year with the program in 2020.
“It is very valuable to have a guy who was a coach in two places at our conference. He knows the ins and outs of this conference. He can help our team in several ways. I’m excited to be able to have him with us, ”said Smart.
Georgia went 8-2 in 2020, finishing second in the Eastern SEC, behind Florida. The Bulldogs ended the season by defeating unbeaten Cincinnati 24-21 in the Peach Bowl.
