Will Arnett will replace Jason Bateman at the last minute, but he won’t skip dinner

Jimmy Kimmel, Will Arnett

We can only imagine the fun and entertaining real-life friends that Jimmy Kimmel, Jason Bateman and Will Arnett must have. At least that judging from the good times that Kimmel and Arnett had in Bateman’s absence Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday. One might think that, in this ruined era of pandemic gaps and precautions, Ozark Bateman would have plenty of free time to book his friend Kimmel’s talk show. He didn’t even need to be in Kimmel’s Hollywood studio in person, for God’s sake, and Kimmel produced a picture of a lonely and fallen Bateman on the spot, apparently playing Words With Friends on his phone. But while Kimmel and Arnett took turns to assure everyone, being an Emmy-winning actor-director is apparently too much of a burden for Jason-chic-pants-Bateman to pick up the phone and zoom in for a miserable late-night promotion.

At least, that seems to be what Arnett was saying, as he spent his entire reservation interview seriously devouring a hearty steak dinner. Speaking of his home podcasting studio (which, one might think, has better wi-fi than occasionally freezing in the middle of an interview), Arnett happily devoured the compensatory, home-delivered meal that Kimmel had sent. Kimmel noted that he thought it was clear that Arnett would enjoy his steak, bacon and side dishes (Arnett especially praised the wedge salad), perhaps after the interview, instead of swallowing it between half-intelligible bits on national TV. But, hey, at least Arnett showed up, unlike some people.

With the previous Stuck Development stars currently entering the bored celebrity podcasting game alongside another friend Sean Hayes, Arnett happily chewed on explaining how his show, SmartLess it has a bit of a friendly ball bursting built into its premise. Two of the presenters don’t know which incredibly famous person the other reserved for any particular episode, which caused Arnett to be seriously silent when Paul McCartney showed up a week. (In fact, Arnett boasted that he was right, while the music icon’s responses could have been a little more restricted.) And while shrugging that big SmartLess billboard in his hometown Toronto is not as impactful during a pandemic as it could be, he assured Kimmel that he has a lot of work ahead of him for the rest of the year. Right after he finishes eating.
