Why the start of the $ 300 extra weekly unemployment benefits will be delayed in Michigan

The additional $ 300 weekly unemployment for residents who qualify for COVID-19, relief will be delayed in Michigan, officials said.

Congress approved a COVID-19 relief package that extends federal pandemic unemployment assistance and pandemic emergency unemployment compensation programs.

The programs, which will provide an extra $ 300 per week for those receiving unemployment benefits, were extended until March 14, officials announced.

According to a statement posted on the state’s website, Michigan and all other states must wait until Department of Labor guidelines are issued before the provisions of the law can be implemented.

“There will be a delay in benefits for those currently enrolled in these federal benefit programs,” says the statement.

The Department of Labor’s guidance will establish new rules that must be interpreted and revised in Michigan, officials said.

“We will have to make updates to our systems to extend the benefits and renew the additional $ 300 payments from the FPUC,” says the statement. “Continue to check the UIA website, as we will provide more information as it becomes available. There is no need to contact the UIA customer service number to address the new legislation. “

The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency, like all state departments, closes on Thursdays and Fridays on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Year-end tax returns for everyone who received unemployment insurance in 2020 will be available online in mid-January. Residents can receive a statement requesting a copy through MiWAM until January 2.
