Lauryn Hill is finally revealing to fans why she never released another musical work after the success of her debut solo album, Lauryn Hill’s misery, in 1998.
Per People, the iconic musician revealed during a conversation at Rolling Stonein 500 best albumss podcast that your record company at the time never offered support or guidance on a follow-up record.
“The wildest thing is that no one from my label ever called me and asked, ‘How can we help you make another album?’ Always never. Did I ever say? Never, “said the winner of eight Grammys.
She also explained that she thought the authenticity behind her art would be at stake in the future with a record company that fought her creativity.
“People included me in their own narratives of their successes with regard to my album and if that contradicted my experience, I was considered an enemy,” she continued. “After The Miseducation, there were dozens of tentacle obstructionists, politicians, repressing agendas, unrealistic expectations and saboteurs everywhere. “
Recognizing that the album remains her only solo work (Hill also recorded and performed alongside The Fugees from 1992 to 1997), she said she understands the impact and influence that the album continues to have until today.
“I challenged the standard and introduced a new standard,” continued the singer. “I believe The Miseducation I did it and I believe I still do it. [Myself and my album] challenge the convention when the convention is questionable. “
Hill and O Education won five Grammys at the 1999 awards ceremony, including honors for Best New Artist, Album of the Year and Best R&B Album.
