Lauryn Hill just shared her heartbreaking reason why she hasn’t released another studio album since her solo debut in 1998 Lauryn Hill’s misery.
The former Fugees member was the first woman to win five Grammys in one night for the album, but left the public eye for years after its release. In a new interview with Rolling StoneAmazon music podcast 500 best albums, Lauryn explained why she never released another full studio album.
“The wildest thing is that no one from my label ever called me and asked how we can help you make another album, never …ever, “she told the podcast.” Did I ever say? Ever!”
She also said that while Education it offered her the freedom to experiment, the pressure to release a second album that lived up to the hype of the first was enormous.
“After Education, there were dozens of tentacle obstructionists, politics, repressed agendas, unrealistic expectations and saboteurs everywhere, “she said.” People included me in their own narratives of their successes with regard to my album, and if that contradicted my experience, I was considered an enemy. “
