On February 19, DaBaby released a new music video called “Beatbox Freestyle”, in which Charlotte’s rapper remixed the 2020 viral track “Beat Box” by SpotEmGottem. This probably wouldn’t have caused big waves – it’s not a collaboration by Megan Thee Stallion, or anything – if it weren’t for a line in the middle of the song, when DaBaby shows a photo of JoJo Siwa on his iPhone and raps, “you’re a bitch, JoJo Siwa, bitch. ”This is a disconcerting cover-up, if that’s what DaBaby intended it to be. DaBaby is a 29-year-old adult man who was arrested last month for carrying a loaded gun. JoJo Siwa is a 17-year-old Nickelodeon star who records songs for children and sells sequin bows on Target. Recently, Siwa revealed herself publicly and opened up about his girlfriend, so the internet was feeling especially protective of her when “Beatbox Freestyle” was launched. Twitter users expressed confusion about why DaBaby would come for children’s entertainment; User Genius veduta suggested that “Siwa” may be just a play on words with the words “see why”. Or maybe it’s the fact that DaBaby has a young daughter, and he can just be irritated by Siwa’s music in the same way that parents are irritated by Baby Shark. In any case, the memes plunged into DaBaby – especially those emphasizing how Siwa is presumably richer and taller than him – were generous and hilarious.
