Why can’t Denzel Ward or Kevin Johnson play the wildcard game against the Steelers? Hey, Mary Kay!

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Hey, Mary Kay! I answer questions about Denzel Ward, Jack Conklin and more.

Hey, Mary Kay: Is there any chance that Denzel Ward or Kevin Johnson will be released on Sunday for the final game? – Bart Zirkle, Bellefontaine, Ohio

Hey, Bart: Unfortunately for the Browns and their two cornerbacks, they cannot be activated on Sunday outside the COVID-19 list. Players had to be activated around 4 pm to play the wild card game, and they were not yet physically ready to be activated off the list. It’s a big loss for the Browns, because it means they may have to start their first year cornerback, Robert Jackson, for the second week in a row. Mason Rudolph took aim at Jackson 10 times in the Browns’ 24-22 victory last week, and he gave up six receptions, including 41 and 47 yards. The Browns, however, took the game from MJ Stewart, a 30-yard interception and return that set up a 3-yard TD driven by Jarvis Landry who did 24-9.

I would expect both back to the Chiefs game and the great Patrick Mahomes if the Browns win.

Hey, Mary Kay: What’s going on with Jack Conklin? Is it a game decision? – Greg Zimmerman, Houston, Texas

Hey, Greg: Conklin was kept at home during Friday practice due to illness and is listed as questionable for the game. But he traveled to Pittsburgh alone on Saturday, so it’s a good sign that he’s going to play. This is the key for the Browns, who are without shipowner Joel Bitonio (COVID-19). They will need all the help they can to stop TJ Watt, Cam Heyward and the other formidable Steelers defenders.

Hey Mary Kay: What’s going on with Money Mitch (Terrance Mitchell)? Did he do something wrong or is he hurt? Can this team finally climb to the top of that mountain in Pittsburgh and slap their older brother in the face? – #beatthesqueelers Jeff Lerner, Avon, Ohio

Hey, Jeff: Mitchell had a positive COVID-19 test on Friday, but when they tested him again, he tested negative. On Saturday, it was determined that he was a false positive like Ronnie Harrison and Montrel Meander, and he was not placed on the reserve list. This means that he will be ready to go to the game, although he is listed as questionable. This is good news for the Browns, as Ward and Johnson are out. If Ben Roethlisberger is rested and playing well, it will be difficult to cover JuJu Smith-Schuster, Chase Claypool and Diontae Johnson. But the Steelers are also without Joe Haden.

Hey Mary Kay: Do you think we should move on from Denzel Ward and go with Terrance Mitchell and Greedy Williams next season? It seems that it is not reliable, even without COVID-19. Mitch started almost every game! – Kevin Laing. Willoughy

Hey, Kevin: Not unmistakably not. Ward is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL and had an excellent season, despite losing five games – three with one leg stretched and the last two because of a positive COVID-19 test. Ward blocked his side of the field and finished tied for second in the NFL with 18 saved passes, despite losing four games of the regular season. It is difficult to find such good cornerbacks and Ward gained an extension in the off season.

Hey, Mary Kay: When Browns’ facilities are closed, how does everyone test every day? Does anyone go to all your homes? And those who are receiving treatment? I assume Myles Garrett is receiving respiratory treatment and others need treatment for injuries. Also, why hasn’t anyone asked Kevin Stefanski how he is feeling? – Cliff Vaughan, Lewis Center, Ohio

Hey, Cliff: The Browns have a drive-through testing center installed outside their facilities and players are required to come every day, even if it’s a bad day. Players can go to the building for medical treatment, even when it is closed, and I think it is safe to assume that Myles Garrett continued to do respiratory treatments to recover from the persistent effects of COVID-19. We asked Kevin Stefanski how he is feeling and he didn’t want to talk about himself too much. He looked a little dejected when he spoke to us on a Zoom conference call on Wednesday, but he was more excited on Friday.
