Why Bill Gates uses Android phones instead of an iPhone

Bill Gates recently participated in a Clubhouse interview with Andrew Ross Sorkin, in which he discussed his new book, the pandemic and technology.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently participated in an interview in which he revealed that he uses an Android phone instead of an iPhone. The discussion took place on the Clubhouse audio chat app with journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin. Billed as a casual chat, it covered topics, including Gates’ new book How to avoid a climate disaster, the pandemic COVID-19 and technology.

Gates is the latest in a line of high-tech names that have made appearances at the Clubhouse. Elon Musk and Robinhood co-founder Vladimir Tenev talked about the increased share of GameStop on the platform and Mark Zuckerberg discussed Facebook Reality Labs and remote work – while perhaps trying to figure out how best to integrate similar features with Facebook. These participations helped, of course, to raise the profile of the Clubhouse, which has not yet left the beta version and is only available for iOS until now.

Sorkin kicked off referring to this, saying that when the interview was announced on Twitter, people asked: “Does Bill Gates have an iPhone?” Gates explained that he has an Android phone for everyday use, but also said that he often plays with iPhones to keep up to date with everything. Elaborating on why he prefers an Android phone for general use, he said: “Some of the Android manufacturers pre-install Microsoft software in a way that makes it easier for me and are more flexible about how the software connects to the operating system, so I got used to it.”

What else did Gates say at the Clubhouse?

At the Clubhouse himself, Gates said he became more familiar with the platform recently and had made some demos of it. He revealed that on most social media platforms he has an official account and an account for “mess up,” but that he prefers to spend time reading books like the Economist and the New York Times. Pressed to find out whether he used Google or Bing, Gates described himself as “a loyal, loyal and loyal Bing user,” saying it uses Google to compare how they’re doing competitively. When he replied that he didn’t know anyone using Bing, Gates joked: “You travel with a very snobbish crowd!”

Asked which companies he thought were doing the most interesting and futuristic things, Gates said Google and Microsoft. “Yes, Amazon is doing a great job, Apple is doing a great job, Facebook,” He explained. “But in terms of really pushing the boundaries of computer science, architecture and AI, I would say that Google and Microsoft have a strong commitment to R&D – both the things they share openly and the things that focus on their own products.”

In the Apple car, he said: “I doubt they have the same margin as they do on the iPhone”, also noting that there is still a question as to how quickly autonomous cars will catch up – and, in fact, whether they will fully. Electric cars, he said, were already a sure thing. In terms of his own car, Gates revealed that he drives a Porsche Taycan. Pressed about why a Porsche instead of a Tesla, he explained that his first car was a Porsche and that his taycan “makes a certain noise.” He noticed that he had bought Teslas for relatives and called him “the company that did the most for electric cars.”

Some additional recommendations came in the form of Lupine, the Netflix show about the French thief and the Oura ring, which is a device for tracking sleep quality.
