‘Whiteout, Brutal Conditions’ On I-70, Closures in the Colorado Mountains, Foothills and Out East – CBS Denver

(CBS4) – Authorities are having trouble keeping Interstate 70 open in the foothills of Colorado during the great snowstorm that is hitting the state on Sunday. Late Sunday morning officials announced that things are also not going well in the Eastern Plains.

As of 1:45 am, I-70 had weather-related closures in the following areas:

– Eastbound Silverthorne to Georgetown
– From Golden to Floyd Hill (on the border of Clear Creek County and Jefferson County)
– Airpark Road in Aurora to Limon

Colorado State Patrol officials said in a tweet that the conditions at Floyd Hill were: “brutal conditions for the white”.

Some out-of-state drivers have been trying to reach Colorado’s ski resorts in the midst of a snowstorm. A family from Orlando, Florida, told CBS4 that they took a detour on I-70 and got stuck in the snow.

“We are going to Breckenridge to ski. The girls had to use the bathroom. We couldn’t go up the hill with the truck with two-wheel drive, so we pulled back and he put it in the ditch, ”said one of the family.

“What advice would you give to other people if this was the first time they were driving in the snow?” asked Justin Adams of CBS4.

“If you are renting a vehicle, make sure it is 4-wheel drive and not 2-wheel,” he replied with a laugh. “Other than that, hey, that’s what this is about.”

The family borrowed a tow rope and started walking again. But they probably won’t forget their ski trip to Colorado in March anytime soon.

According to meteorologist Ashton Altieri, a blizzard alert, winter storm alerts and winter weather alerts continue for many areas around the state with additional accumulation expected in all areas.
