“No. The president has made it clear that he is focused on ensuring that vaccines are accessible to all Americans. That is our focus,” Psaki told reporters at a press conference at the White House.
“The next step is the economic recovery. And that is to ensure that our neighbors, Mexico and Canada, have managed the pandemic in a similar way, so that we can open our borders and rebuild better, ”he added.
For now, however, “the government’s focus is on ensuring that all Americans are vaccinated,” said Psaki. “And once we reach that goal, we will be happy to discuss further steps beyond that.”
Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas will join Biden in his meeting with López Obrador. The leaders will discuss “a new phase of the bilateral US-Mexico relationship,” said Psaki, with specific emphasis on “migration, Covid-19 recovery, climate change and security”.
On Saturday, the Food and Drug Administration authorized the emergency use of the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine – the third injection to be released for use in the United States, after those of Pfizer and Moderna.
Weekly vaccine shipments to the states rose to 14.5 million last month, and drugmakers testified last week that the U.S. is on track to have 3 million doses a day available by April.
