Which supposed Apple Silicon iMac are you most excited about?

The new iMacs with Apple Silicon will soon become a reality. More recently, 9to5Mac found references to new models in the latest macOS Big Sur 11.3 beta, while Apple discontinuing some 21.5-inch iMacs also indicates that an update is coming.

Since Apple redesigned the iMac in 2012 with an ultra-thin side profile and removed the SuperDrive, it has introduced only a few adjustments, such as SSD storage options, nano-textured glass and the 1080p FaceTime camera.

Fortunately, for 2021, it is rumored that Apple is working on a redesign inspired by the Pro Display XDR. Here’s what we expect from the new design:

  • A flat back, replacing the current curved design on the back of the iMac
  • No more chin on the bottom
  • Thinner frames around the screen
  • “Similar” to Pro Display XDR

With all that in mind, rumors suggest that Apple is developing a 24-inch iMac to replace the 21.5-inch option. It is possible that the 27-inch iMac’s screen could grow to something like 30 or 32 inches, like the Pro Display XDR screen. Some rumors also suggest that the iMac can be colored like the fourth generation iPad Air.

In terms of performance, all we know now is what Bloomberg reported in December:

Bloomberg says Apple is working on successors for the M1 with up to 20 CPU cores, made up of 16 high-performance and 4 efficiency cores. In 2021, the company is expected to launch ARM versions of the next generation MacBook Pro, “basic and advanced iMac desktops”. A Mac Pro ARM is scheduled to happen in 2022.

In addition, we were able to see some differences in storage options, RAM and screen resolution on these models. It is also unlikely that Apple will reintroduce the iMac Pro with an Apple Silicon chip, as it has been discontinued and the differentiation of features can be a challenge for Apple.
