Which QB domino is about to fall? The latest news on Bears, Texans, 49ers and more

First was the exchange of the January 30 blockbuster between the Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Rams – Matthew Stafford for Jared Goff and choices in the draft. Then, on Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles traded former MVP contender Carson Wentz for the Indianapolis Colts.

The quarterback’s carousel is certainly spinning – the question is, who’s next?

Several teams are on the market for a QB. ESPN’s Adam Schefter forecast last month up to 18 NFL teams may have a new title next season.

Let’s check out 10 teams, listed in alphabetical order, that are looking to update or for a new beginner. The Jaguars must face the quarterback with the general choice # 1 in the 2021 draft and are not on the list.

2020 for beginners: Teddy Bridgewater

Unless other defenders become available through free agency or commerce, Panthers have two options after losing Stafford: they can wait for Texans to meet Deshaun Watson’s desire to be negotiated and present a suitable package or they can sketch a QB, probably with the eighth choice.

The first option is preferable because Watson is a proven commodity and would be a great fit for offensive coordinator Joe Brady’s scheme. That Carolina offered Bridgewater, the eighth overall choice and a fifth round pick for Detroit for Stafford shows that they are serious about updating the position.

Aside from Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, the other college QB candidates are flawed and are unlikely to immediately raise the team to the tiebreaker owner David Tepper wants. If none of these scenarios happen, the Panthers are prepared to go with Bridgewater another year and update the talent around them – especially the offensive line and the tight end. – David Newton

Rob Ninkovich and Ryan Clark defend the Bears that chase Deshaun Watson.

2020 for beginners: Mitchell Trubisky

This is probably GM Ryan Pace’s last chance to get the defender’s position right. From Mike Glennon to Trubisky and Nick Foles, the search continues. Pace may not be able to find an immediate and foolproof starting point where he is choosing in the first round (No. 20 overall). In fact, Mel Kiper Jr. designed five defenders in the top 15. He has no other defender in the first round after the 15th choice.

In Todd McShay’s last mock draft, he made the Bears move up to 12th place to be with Mac Jones from Alabama. But that is only if the Bears do not get one of the beginners who are in the trading market or want to be.

If the Jets decide to leave Sam Darnold, then perhaps he is intriguing to the Bears because he is in his rookie contract and they would have the option to exercise their fifth year option in 2022. Or perhaps Pace hopes that the Texans will give in. and exchange Watson. The Bears are apparently stuck with the Bellows as an expensive backup, but Pace is still looking for a better solution. – Rob Demovsky

2020 for beginners: Drew Lock

The Broncos have a Plan A: Lock is the holder in 2021 and the team will acquire a competitive reserve that can push and help him. They can easily go to Plan B if they think they can do better than Lock. They immersed themselves in Stafford’s business discussion before hearing that what they were offering was nowhere near what the Lions could get from the Rams.

They have done due diligence on the defenders who will be available and / or are being purchased by their current teams and will consider any and all moves. And that includes what they can do with draft number 9. – Jeff Legwold

Damien Woody explains why he would like to see Deshaun Watson at the Broncos.

2020 for beginners: Deshaun Watson

The Texans said, publicly and privately, that they don’t want to negotiate Watson. However, Texans had internal conversations about trading partners and what the position would be like without Watson, according to a source. Regardless, Watson is not taking the team’s calls, so there has been no progress in repairing the relationship.

Houston has no incentive to negotiate the defender who signed on a $ 156 million contract extension for four years in September, which runs until the 2025 season. The big question is whether Watson will be left out if the team refuses to switch. it. The cost would be high – he would be fined $ 95,877 for losing a mini-field, $ 50,000 for every day of camp he loses and $ 620,000 – for every preseason game he misses – but it may be Watson’s only choice if he don’t want to play in Houston. – Sarah Barshop

2020 for beginners: Cam Newton

The Patriots will continue to explore all of their options – free agency, draft (where they have choice # 15) and business. There is no foolproof answer now. They had no significant interest in Wentz due to the financial commitment and dipped their toes in the waters of Matthew Stafford, but would not be players with the final asking price.

One of the best things they have in their favor is the robust wage cap space, so if an unexpected opportunity presents itself (for example, Jimmy Garoppolo, Watson etc.), they can attack. What they will not do is force you just to check the QB box to meet an artificial deadline, even though some in the organization would like some clarity by entering a free agency in a potential competitive situation to sign a receiver or tight end.

One could argue that Marcus Mariota of the Raiders would make sense as a bridge option in a modest trade. In addition, Newton’s return may be difficult to sell to fans, but the Patriots are in no position to close any doors now. – Mike Reiss

2020 for beginners: Drew Brees

The Saints will need a starting quarterback for the first time in 15 years, as soon as Brees announces his retirement. They made it clear that they want to re-sign free agent Jameis Winston to compete with backup colleague Taysom Hill for the show. And coach Sean Payton has repeatedly expressed confidence in both competitors, insisting that New Orleans’ next starting QB is already “under construction”.

It remains to be seen whether Winston will attract more interest in the open market than last year. But he chose the Saints partly because he anticipated that opportunity, so a team would have to make a very attractive offer to attract him. It is also possible for the Saints to consider other options through commerce, free agency or draft. But all of these paths seem unlikely, considering that they didn’t choose until the 28th in the project and have severe wage cap limitations. – Mike Triplett

2020 for beginners: Sam Darnold

The Jets are in a waiting pattern as they continue to assess Darnold, the trade market and the best quarterbacks in the draft.

The time for potential negotiation is a delicate balance. If they wait too long to make a decision about Darnold, they risk losing suitors, who can turn elsewhere. With Carson Wentz off the table, poor quarterback teams are waiting for the Jets to make up their minds. If they were offered a high round or a low round, the Jets would likely move Darnold and draft Zach Wilson with the second overall choice in the draft. – Rich Cimini

2020 for beginners: Ben Roethlisberger

The Steelers want to add another quarterback to the room – regardless of Roethlisberger’s status in 2021. The type of quarterback, however, will depend on Roethlisberger’s future with the organization. If Roethlisberger returns on a reduced salary in 2021, the team can afford to take on another developmental defender to learn behind him and complete a developmental player room in Mason Rudolph and former first-round player Dwayne Haskins Jr.

The most likely route is to draft a quarterback in the third or fourth round of the 2021 draft, similar to his approach to taking Rudolph in the third round of the 2017 draft or Joshua Dobbs in the fourth of 2016. If Roethlisberger retires, however, the need is makes it more urgent.

In that case, Rudolph becomes the favorite for the starting position, but the team could use some of the space freed up by Roethlisberger’s departure to lure a mid-level veteran like Tyrod Taylor to Pittsburgh for a one-year contract to compete with Rudolph. Rudolph showed progress under the direction of defensive midfielder Matt Canada, and the organization believes he could lead the franchise if he continues to show the development shown in the 17 week defeat to the Cleveland Browns. – Brooke Pryor

Stephen A. Smith sees Jimmy Garoppolo starting at the 49ers next season, but Max Kellerman defends Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.

2020 for beginners: Jimmy Garoppolo

Despite persistent speculation, the 49ers are on the side of Garoppolo. This position seems increasingly unlikely to change, except for the potential for great development. Coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that an obvious upgrade would be needed to spend vital resources and leave Garoppolo. Deshaun Watson of the Texans is the only potentially available defender who clearly meets these criteria and the Niners are monitoring this situation closely as Houston tries to reconcile with its distant caller.

But the 49ers’ comfort level with Garoppolo is high enough that they can be patient and wait. If Texans agree with Watson and negotiate with him, the Niners are likely to get involved. Other than that, the most realistic approach to San Francisco remains attached to Garoppolo and spending a relatively early choice in the draft and / or hiring a veteran free agent to increase the depth of his quarterback in the event of another Garoppolo injury. – Nick Wagoner

2020 for beginners: Alex Smith

Washington continues to explore all quarterback options while looking to improve. The team is confident that Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke can help, but they are not seen as long-term solutions. That’s why Washington looked at potentially available defenders, from Sam Darnold to Marcus Mariota.

A team source said there were five quarterbacks that Washington wanted to explore further, although they did not disclose those names. They don’t want to mortgage much to get one – not with key holes yet for offense. It is also possible that they will bring back Alex Smith, who has not publicly said he wants to play again, but signs point to that desire.

And a source said that if Washington can’t update, it could go with Smith, Allen and Heinicke while reinforcing the talent around it – and then try to seek this position again in the next off-season. With its defense – and a few more offensive weapons – Washington feels that this group can win nine or ten games. But if the team goes in that direction, it’s hard to imagine them wanting to bring Smith back with his $ 24.4 million cap. It is also unknown whether Smith wants to continue playing in Washington. – John Keim
